As indicated on the title 『開山禅師之行状』, this volume is a compilation of various materials concerning the history of Dogen zeinji, and is a fundamental biographical data for the study of Dogen zenji. Judging from the fact that the colophon says 「元禄七申戌暦春之日 起雲峯下書写之畢 門子(花押)」 at the end of the book, it is considered that this manuscript is so-called 「門子本」, transcribed by 門子 in 1694 (Genroku 7). Although 『建撕記』 is generally known as 『訂補建撕記』 revised by 面山瑞方(Menzan Zuiho, 1683-1769), many older manuscripts have recently been found. it is assumed that our collection is also one of these older manuscripts, because the original forms of the biography of Dogen zenji before the revise by Menzan still remain.
