開闢越州吉祥山大佛寺語録

The present volumes were copied by Chogo (長護). We have only vols. 1-2 among the complete 10 vols. Date and place of copy are confirmed by the following description at the end of vol. 2: 「二巻分 上堂五十九 頌古十首 大圓山心月禅寺現住瞻南和尚之代 于時寛永辛未稔冬日住寫本焼香三拝而長護拝謹書」, i.e. “in winter of 1631 (Kan'ei 8), Chogo, the zen practicer, copied the texts, staying at 瞻南 of 大円山心月寺. Gesshinji temple is located in Fukui city, and 瞻南呑佐 was the 13th (chief) priest of that temple. Altough there are two main editions which are called 卍山本『永平広録』(流布本), revised by 卍山道白(復古老人 1636-1715) and 門鶴本『道元和尚広録』, transcribed by 門鶴(-1615) who was 20th head priest of Heiheiji temple, it should be understood that the present volumes is descended from the latter version. It is quite regrettable that only vols. 1-2 come to our hands in view of the fact that the MSS. are considered to be fairly accurate copies of the originals.
